About Volunteering with Home-Start Cymru
Volunteering is a great way to use your skills and meet new people, while making a difference to families. Our volunteers provide companionship, a listening ear, offer compassion and support to families. You don’t have to have a child of your own to get involved, you simply have to care.
As a volunteer, you will support families with individual one-to-one home visiting or remotely, through weekly contact and a wide range of targeted support for parents and their children.

To help give children the best possible start in life, because childhood can’t wait. Home-Start Cymru supports parents as they grow in confidence, strengthen relationships with their children and widen links with the local community. We offer support, friendship and practical help to parents with young children in the local community.
By sharing their time and friendship, volunteers offer families opportunities to develop new relationships, fresh ideas, and enhanced skills and capabilities. Families can gain the confidence to take advantage of other resources in the community.
The work of the volunteer requires a high level of commitment and reliability, volunteers will be regularly supported by Home-Start Cymru.
A Home-Start Cymru volunteer should:
- Be a parent or have parenting experience.
- Have a positive attitude to working with people of any gender, family status or sexual identity, or who are from any ethnic origin, culture, or religion, or who may have a disability.
- Demonstrate a sensitive and caring attitude towards others.
- Be clear about confidentiality.
- Be reliable and understand the importance of reliability to the family.
- Have good communication skills including an ability to listen.
- Have a warm and open personality and a sense of humour.
- Be able to work as a member of a team.
- Commit to visiting or calling a family member each week at a mutually agreed time.
- Be prepared to keep records as requested by the scheme.
