Home-Start Cymru Volunteer Cllr Sheryl Evans Appointed as New Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf, Championing Community Support
Rhondda Cynon Taf– Sheryl Evans the newly appointed Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf (RCT), is reinforcing her deep-rooted commitment to community service and volunteerism. Having lived in RCT all her life, just a few streets away from where she was born, she brings a wealth of experience in law, the NHS, and public service to her mayoral role.
Her journey into public service began with grassroots engagement, attending local meetings, and working closely with the community. “Volunteering has always been a cornerstone of my life. It’s where I started, and it continues to shape my perspective as Mayor,” she stated. Her dedication led her to serve as a councillor for over a decade, including positions as Deputy Mayor and now Mayor.
Her passion for volunteerism was ignited when a friend introduced her to Home-Start Cymru, a charity supporting families with young children. “I had time on my hands, and after learning about the cause, I decided to apply. I was accepted and supported two families, building relationships that continue to this day,” she explained. Her work involved helping children gain confidence, providing emotional support, and fostering a sense of connection within the community.
As Mayor, she is eager to champion volunteer initiatives across RCT. “I want to replicate successful community projects in my own ward to ensure more people receive the support they need. Volunteering is incredibly rewarding, and I encourage everyone to get involved,” she emphasised.
In a heartwarming addition to her mayoral journey, her daughter is serving as her consort, making this role a true family affair. With a strong vision for RCT, the Mayor aims to expand volunteer engagement and enhance community support networks, ensuring that no resident feels alone in their struggles.
